SIXTEEN

Edmund, Cal, and Tamara had only just begun to list their options when Dex and Sebastian walked away from their table. A cloud of women fluttered around them as they left, reminding Tamara of Pigpen’s dirt cloud in the Peanuts cartoon. The three of them scurried to keep up, but the crowded casino seemed to be working against them. Somehow, people stepped out of the way of Sebastian and his group, but then immediately clustered directly in front of Tamara and her friends.

“Is Sebastian making this happen?” she asked as they shouldered and elbowed their way around people.

“I don’t know how he could without actually talking to each of them.” Cal continually apologized to whoever he bumped into or poked in his effort to follow Sebastian.

Tamara couldn’t get over the change in Dex. He even walked with more confidence and grace. He looked like a man used to money and power. How could he have changed so completely? Was it knowing he had the protection of a demon? Was it simply because of his fine suit? Had he always wanted to be rich and powerful? He’d never mentioned it. His dreams had always seemed geared toward emotional pursuits; to be happy and content. To do good things for others. The Dex she was currently chasing was not the Dex she’d been living with for a year now.

Another crowd of people clustered together, blocking her view. “I can’t see them, Cal. Can you?”

He shook his head.

“They are headed toward the front doors,” Edmund’s voice sounded constricted from their brisk pace.

“Sebastian’s aura,” Tamara breathed. She gave Edmund a grateful smile as they altered their path to follow.

“Oh!” Edmund picked up his pace, turning sideways to slide between two groups. “I think they’ve gotten into a car.”

The three of them jogged through the front doors and to the curb. Cal raised a finger to hail a taxi, while Edmund peered up the street, standing on tiptoe.

Edmund climbed into the front seat of the cab while Tamara and Cal crawled into the back.

“We’ve lost our friends,” Edmund explained to the driver. “They are about a block ahead. Can you try to catch up, please?”

The driver shrugged and pulled into the mostly slow-moving traffic. He weaved in and out of traffic trying to fulfill Edmund’s request. Edmund’s head bobbed back and forth as he tried to catch sight of the car Sebastian and Dex had gotten into.

“Oh, there! They’re headed into that hotel,” Edmund cried. The driver cut in front of a couple other cabs to pull to the curb. Edmund handed him money before they came to a full stop. “Thank you, sir!”

The driver shrugged again.

The three of them tumbled out of the cab onto the sidewalk. An impossibly large revolving door was in constant motion. Tamara and Cal stepped into a segment of the door together and Edmund shuffled into the next, even though the three of them could have all fit in together. The door spun painfully slow, and Tamara found herself pressed against the glass, trying to get it to move faster.
